Authentic Advisories: Building Communities to Support Students
$150
The teen years are critical to students’ social-emotional development. Advisory groups can offer critical support for high school and middle school students, but only when their members feel safe enough and brave enough to be their authentic selves. This live, hands-on virtual workshop—which spans four online sessions will help educators create (and sustain) strong advisory communities where middle school and high school students feel both safe and brave.
Participants will engage with lessons, routines, and discussion techniques that they can bring back to their classrooms. Topics include:
Establishing a community of trust and rapport.
Nurturing authenticity.
Developing strategies for supporting their students’ social-emotional development.
Centering student voice.
Reflecting on their own identities as well as the identities of their students.
Discussing ways to support and affirm the diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives students bring into the classroom.
At the end of this workshop, participants and facilitators will co-design specific processes for each participant’s individual work and help them build a plan for implementation.
